LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: 112th Congress: Status of Abortion Funding

Thursday, April 14, 2011, the House and Senate concluded consideration of the 2011 funding bill (House Resolution 1473). In addition to the funding bill itself, Congress considered two important pro-life resolutions: the Alexander Resolution to defund Obamacare (House Congressional Resolution 35 to defund Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act), and a resolution to defund Planned Parenthood (House Congressional Resolution 36 Black/Roby). See the statement and fact sheet by Pro-life Congressman Chris Smith (R-N.J.) here.

The budget passed the House with a successful vote to defund Planned Parenthood and Obamacare. However, the vote in the Senate was not successful on either of these two important points. The votes on each resolution are detailed below.

The resolution to defund Planned Parenthood passed in the House by a vote of 241-185-1. View the House roll call vote on the Black/Roby resolution at http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2011/roll271.xml.

Similarly, the resolution to defund Obamacare passed in the House passed by a vote of 240-185. View the House roll call vote on the Alexander resolution at http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2011/roll270.xml.

The Senate rejected the resolution to defund Planned Parenthood by a vote of 42-58. View the Senate roll call vote on the Black/Roby resolution at http://senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=112&session=1&vote=00060.

The Senate refused to defund Obamacare was by a vote of 47-53. View the Senate roll call vote on the Alexander resolution at http://senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=112&session=1&vote=00059.

Congratulations to the House of Representatives for voting to defund Planned Parenthood and Obamacare. The voters ousted the pro-abortion House last election and it is time to do the same to the pro-abortion Senate in 2012. America must start protecting its weak and vulnerable, especially when the powers that be are funding the extinction and exploitation of the women and children who have the misfortune of entering a Planned Parenthood.
