Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that it is launching an official investigation into Planned Parenthood and its abortion allies.
Justice Department Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd requested
unredacted documents from the Senate Judiciary Committee, which spearheaded a congressional investigation into Planned Parenthood’s role in the illegal trafficking of fetal tissue for profit. The Committee published its findings in a December 2016 report titled “Human Fetal Tissue Research: Context and Controversy.”
The report details numerous violations of the federal ban on selling fetal organs and tissue, including evidence that at least three fetal tissue brokers purchased the remains of aborted babies from Planned Parenthood affiliates and sold them “at substantially higher prices than their documented costs.”
Planned Parenthood was aware that this practice was illegal—and that it violated PP’s internal policies. Instead of discontinuing the sale of body parts, Planned Parenthood officials changed their policies to accommodate the increasingly profitable business practice.
The abortion cartel shrouded its transactions in secrecy for decades—until David Daleiden’s Center for Medical Progress published a series of undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood directors shrewdly negotiating the sale of fetal organs. The videos also provide evidence of PP affiliates engaging in fraudulent accounting to cover up the fees it charges for baby body parts. In one video, the Director of Research for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, which runs the nation’s single largest abortion facility, is seen referring to costs for fetal specimens as “per consent” fees.
Life Legal represents David in two massive lawsuits filed by Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation in retaliation for releasing the videos. We are currently seeking Supreme Court review of the First Amendment issues raised in one of the cases. The Court recently responded favorably by requesting additional briefing. David and his colleague Sandra Merritt have also been charged with 15 criminal counts under California’s eavesdropping statute by Attorney General Xavier Becerra, a long-time Planned Parenthood supporter.
